About Shnayim Mikra

The practice of שניים מקרא ואחד תרגום (Shnayim Mikra V’Echad Targum) involves reading each verse of the weekly Torah portion twice in Hebrew and once in Aramaic (Targum Onkelos) before Shabbat.

About Parashat Yitro

Parashat Yitro tells the story of Yitro (Jethro), Moses’ father-in-law, who hears of the miracles God performed for Israel and comes to join them in the wilderness. Yitro advises Moses to establish a system of judges to share the burden of leadership.

The parasha then describes the dramatic revelation at Mount Sinai, where the entire nation of Israel experiences the giving of the Torah. The highlight of the parasha is the Ten Commandments (עשרת הדברות), which form the foundation of Jewish law and ethics.
