About Parashat Mishpatim

Parashat Mishpatim (“Laws”) contains the first major collection of civil and criminal laws given to the Israelites at Sinai. Immediately following the revelation of the Ten Commandments, this parasha presents a detailed legal code covering:

  • Laws of servitude — Hebrew slaves, maidservants, and their rights
  • Personal injury laws — Murder, manslaughter, assault, and compensation
  • Property laws — Theft, damages, bailment, and borrowed items
  • Social ethics — Treatment of strangers, widows, orphans, and the poor
  • Judicial integrity — False testimony, bribery, and justice for all
  • Festival observances — Shabbat, Shmita, and the three pilgrimage festivals
  • The covenant ceremony — Moses, the elders, and the blood of the covenant

The parasha concludes with Moses ascending Mount Sinai to receive the tablets, remaining there for forty days and forty nights.

About Shnayim Mikra

The practice of שניים מקרא ואחד תרגום (Shnayim Mikra V’Echad Targum) involves reading each verse of the weekly Torah portion twice in Hebrew and once in Aramaic (Targum Onkelos) before Shabbat.
