קלאוד על הנ״ך

Joshua chapter 24, the final chapter of the book, is one of the great covenant scenes in all of Scripture. Set at Shechem — the same location where Abraham first received God’s promise upon entering Canaan (Genesis 12:6-7), where Jacob buried foreign gods (Genesis 35:4), and where the blessings and curses were proclaimed upon entering the land (Joshua 8:30-35) — the choice of venue is profoundly deliberate. Joshua assembles “all the tribes of Israel” and they “presented themselves before God” (verse 1), a phrase suggesting a formal theophanic or juridical setting. What follows is a covenant renewal ceremony that recapitulates the entire sweep of Israelite history before demanding a choice.

God speaks in the first person through Joshua, recounting the national story from its pagan origins to the present moment of triumph. The historical review begins strikingly with the admission that “your ancestors — Terah, father of Abraham and father of Nahor — lived beyond the Euphrates and worshiped other gods” (verse 2). Israel’s identity does not begin with inherent righteousness but with divine election out of idolatry. The narrative moves through Abraham’s journey, the sojourn in Egypt, the Exodus, the wilderness, the encounter with Balak and Balaam, the crossing of the Jordan, and the conquest — all presented with the recurring first-person emphasis: “I took,” “I gave,” “I sent,” “I plagued,” “I brought,” “I delivered.” The theological point is unmistakable: everything Israel possesses is God’s doing. “I have given you a land for which you did not labor and towns that you did not build” (verse 13).

The climax arrives with Joshua’s famous challenge in verse 15: “Choose this day which ones you are going to serve — the gods that your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or those of the Amorites in whose land you are settled; but I and my household will serve God.” This is not a rhetorical flourish but a genuine demand for decision. Joshua frames the choice starkly — there is no comfortable middle ground. When the people enthusiastically declare their loyalty, Joshua’s response is startling: “You will not be able to serve the Eternal — who is a holy God, a jealous one — who will not forgive your transgressions and your sins” (verse 19). Far from celebrating their commitment, Joshua tests it by stating its difficulty. Only after the people affirm their choice three times does Joshua accept it, declaring them “witnesses against yourselves” (verse 22).

The covenant is sealed with a stone witness placed under the oak at Shechem, and the people are dismissed. The book then concludes with three burials that close out an era: Joshua dies at 110 years old and is buried at Timnath-serah; the bones of Joseph, carried up from Egypt in fulfillment of the oath in Genesis 50:25, are finally laid to rest at Shechem; and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest dies and is buried in the hill country of Ephraim. These three burials — of the military leader, the patriarch whose remains bridged the exile and the homecoming, and the priestly authority — mark the definitive end of the founding generation. The ominous note in verse 31, that “Israel served God during the lifetime of Joshua and the lifetime of the elders who lived on after Joshua,” carries an implicit warning: what happens when no one remains who personally experienced God’s mighty works? The Book of Judges will answer that question with devastating clarity.
