קלאוד על הנ״ך
Joshua chapter 10 is the longest and most action-packed chapter in the book so far, containing the famous miracle of the sun standing still and a sweeping military campaign through southern Canaan. It demonstrates how Israel’s treaty with Gibeon—made in error in chapter 9—becomes the catalyst for a major military victory.
The chapter begins with Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem, alarmed by Gibeon’s treaty with Israel. Gibeon was “a great city, like one of the royal cities,” and its defection to Israel’s side is a strategic disaster for the Canaanite coalition. Adoni-Zedek rallies four other southern kings—of Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—to punish Gibeon for making peace with Israel. The Gibeonites send an urgent message to Joshua at Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants! Come up quickly and save us!”
God encourages Joshua: “Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands; not one of them shall withstand you.” Joshua marches all night from Gilgal—an uphill climb of some 3,400 feet over roughly 20 miles—and catches the coalition by surprise. God throws the enemy into confusion, and Israel pursues them along the descent of Beth-horon. Then God intervenes directly: “The LORD hurled huge stones from heaven on them… more died from the hailstones than the Israelites killed by the sword.”
It is at this moment that Joshua speaks the famous words: “Sun, stand still upon Gibeon, and Moon, in the valley of Ayalon!” (שֶׁמֶשׁ בְּגִבְעוֹן דּוֹם וְיָרֵחַ בְּעֵמֶק אַיָּלוֹן). The text states that the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed setting for about a full day, and adds: “There was no day like that before or after, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man.” This miracle—whether understood literally as a cosmic event or as poetic language for an extraordinary battlefield experience—underscores the theme that God fights for Israel. The passage is quoted from the Book of Yashar (סֵפֶר הַיָּשָׁר), one of several lost ancient texts referenced in Tanakh.
The five kings flee and hide in a cave at Makkedah. Joshua orders the cave sealed with boulders and continues the pursuit. After the battle, he has the kings brought out, commands his officers to place their feet on the kings’ necks—a symbolic act of total dominion—and executes them. The second half of the chapter catalogs Joshua’s rapid conquest of the southern cities: Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Gezer, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir. Each city is conquered and placed under חֵרֶם. The chapter concludes with a summary: “Joshua conquered all these kings and their lands in a single campaign, for the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.” The army returns to Gilgal—their base camp and spiritual center.
