About Parashat Terumah

Parashat Terumah (“Contribution”) describes God’s detailed instructions to Moses for the construction of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) — the portable sanctuary that would accompany the Israelites through the wilderness. The parasha covers:

  • The offerings — Materials donated by the people: gold, silver, copper, dyed yarns, fine linen, animal skins, wood, oil, spices, and precious stones
  • The Ark (Aron) — The gold-covered acacia wood chest to house the Tablets of the Covenant, topped with the Kapporet (Cover) and two golden Cherubim
  • The Table (Shulchan) — The gold-covered table for the showbread (Lechem HaPanim)
  • The Menorah — The seven-branched golden lampstand, hammered from a single piece of gold
  • The Curtains (Yerios) — The inner and outer coverings of the Tabernacle
  • The Boards (Kerashim) — The acacia wood frames forming the walls of the Mishkan
  • The Veil (Parochet) — The curtain separating the Holy of Holies from the Holy area
  • The Altar (Mizbe’ach) — The copper-covered altar for burnt offerings
  • The Courtyard (Chatzer) — The enclosure surrounding the Tabernacle

This is the first of several parashiot devoted to the Mishkan’s construction, reflecting the central importance of creating a dwelling place for God’s presence among Israel.
