יהושע פרק א׳

Section: נביאים · נביאים ראשונים | Book: Joshua | Chapter: 1 of 24 | Day: 1 of 742

קלאוד על הנ״ך

Joshua chapter 1 marks a pivotal transition in biblical history—the passing of leadership from Moses to Joshua. After forty years of wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites stand poised on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, ready to enter the Promised Land. God speaks directly to Joshua, commanding him to lead the people across the Jordan and assuring him that every place they set foot will be theirs, from the wilderness to Lebanon, from the Euphrates to the Mediterranean Sea.

The chapter’s central message is encapsulated in the thrice-repeated phrase “be strong and courageous” (חֲזַק וֶאֱמָץ). God promises Joshua that just as He was with Moses, so He will be with Joshua—never leaving or forsaking him. This divine assurance is coupled with a critical condition: success depends on meditating on the Torah day and night and carefully observing all its commandments. The connection between courage and Torah observance establishes a model for Jewish leadership that persists throughout the prophetic literature.

The chapter concludes with Joshua’s first acts of leadership: commanding the officers to prepare provisions and reminding the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh of their promise to Moses. These eastern tribes had already received their inheritance on the eastern side of the Jordan, but they pledged to help their brothers conquer the western land before settling down. Their response to Joshua—“Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you”—confirms the successful transfer of authority and sets the stage for the conquest narratives that follow.

This opening chapter establishes themes that will resonate throughout the book: divine faithfulness to ancestral promises, the importance of courage grounded in faith, the centrality of Torah, and the unity of all twelve tribes in their sacred mission.
