About the Book of I Samuel

The Book of I Samuel narrates one of the most dramatic transitions in Israelite history: from the loose tribal confederation under the judges to the establishment of a centralized monarchy. It opens in an era of spiritual decline — the priesthood at Shiloh is corrupt, the Philistines dominate the coastal plain, and Israel lacks cohesive leadership.

Into this vacuum steps Samuel, the last of the judges and one of the greatest prophets. Born to the barren Hannah through fervent prayer, Samuel is dedicated to God’s service from infancy. He becomes the moral compass of the nation — prophet, judge, and kingmaker. The book traces the demand for a king, the tragic reign of Saul, and the rise of David from shepherd to fugitive to heir apparent.
