Joshua 22

יהושע פרק כ״ב

Section: נביאים · נביאים ראשונים | Book: Joshua | Chapter: 22 of 24 | Day: 22 of 742

Date: March 5, 2026

קלאוד על הנ״ך

Joshua chapter 22 presents one of the most dramatic and theologically rich narratives in the entire book — a near-civil-war averted by diplomacy and a profound meditation on what holds a geographically divided nation together. The chapter opens with Joshua formally dismissing the two-and-a-half Transjordanian tribes — Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh — who had faithfully fulfilled their obligation to fight alongside their brothers west of the Jordan. Joshua commends them warmly: “You have not forsaken your kindred through the long years” (verse 3), and charges them to continue observing the Torah, “to love the Eternal your God, to walk in godly ways” (verse 5). He blesses them and sends them home laden with spoils to share with their kin who remained in Gilead.

The crisis erupts when the departing tribes build a “great conspicuous altar” (mizbe’ach gadol l’mar’eh) by the Jordan (verse 10). The western tribes interpret this as an act of religious rebellion — the establishment of a rival sacrificial site that would violate the centralization of worship at the Tabernacle in Shiloh. The reaction is immediate and extreme: “the whole community of the Israelites assembled at Shiloh to make war on them” (verse 12). The specter of the sin of Peor (Numbers 25) and Achan’s violation (Joshua 7) are invoked explicitly — both cases where individual sin brought collective divine punishment. The western Israelites frame the issue in terms of corporate responsibility: “If you rebel against God today, tomorrow the divine wrath will be directed at the whole community of Israel” (verse 18).

What saves the situation is the decision to send a diplomatic delegation before resorting to arms. Phinehas son of Eleazar — himself a symbol of zealous defense of God’s honor from the Peor incident (Numbers 25:7-13) — leads ten tribal chieftains to hear the Transjordanian explanation. The eastern tribes’ response is both passionate and theologically sophisticated. They swear a triple oath invoking God’s name: “God, the Eternal God! God, the Eternal God, surely knows!” (verse 22). Their altar, they explain, was never intended for sacrifices. It was built as an ed — a “witness” — against the very danger the western tribes feared. Their concern was future-oriented: that generations later, the Jordan River would become not merely a geographic boundary but a spiritual one, with western Israelites telling eastern children, “You have no share in God!” (verse 25). The altar stands as a permanent reminder of shared covenant identity.

This episode raises enduring questions about the nature of religious unity across geographic distance. The Transjordanian tribes anticipate a problem that will indeed plague Israel throughout its history: the tendency for physical separation to breed spiritual alienation. Their solution — a monumental symbol that points back to the central sanctuary rather than competing with it — represents a sophisticated understanding of how memory and identity must be actively maintained. Phinehas’s acceptance of this explanation, declaring “Now we know that God is in our midst” (verse 31), affirms that faithful intention matters as much as outward appearance. The chapter’s resolution models a pattern of communication and trust that the Book of Judges will show Israel failing to replicate.
