קלאוד על הנ״ך

Joshua chapter 3 describes one of the most dramatic moments in Israelite history: the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River. After forty years of wandering, the Israelites finally prepare to enter the Promised Land. Joshua rises early and leads the people from Shittim to the banks of the Jordan, where they camp for three days. The officers then instruct the people to watch for the Ark of the Covenant carried by the Levitical priests—when they see it move, they are to follow, maintaining a distance of about two thousand cubits so all can see the way forward.

Joshua announces to the people that they are about to witness proof that “a living God is in your midst”—the waters of the Jordan will be cut off before the Ark. This miracle is explicitly designed to echo the crossing of the Red Sea under Moses, establishing Joshua’s credentials as Moses’ legitimate successor. God tells Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they will know that I will be with you just as I was with Moses.” The parallel is intentional: just as Israel passed through water to leave Egypt, they now pass through water to enter the Land.

The timing of the crossing heightens the miracle’s drama. The text notes that the Jordan overflows its banks during the harvest season (spring), when the river is at its most formidable. Yet the moment the priests carrying the Ark step into the water, the river stops flowing. The waters pile up “in a single heap” far upstream at a place called Adam, while the riverbed downstream dries up completely. The priests stand firm in the middle of the dry riverbed as the entire nation crosses over.

This chapter emphasizes several key themes: God’s faithfulness to His promises, the continuity between Moses and Joshua, the centrality of the Ark (representing God’s presence), and the importance of communal witness to divine miracles. The crossing transforms the Israelites from desert wanderers to conquerors entering their inheritance. It also foreshadows the ritual immersion (tevilah) that would become central to Jewish spiritual practice—passing through water as a transformative act of entering a new spiritual state.
